The title,
Gardener of The World is taken from Robert Louis
Stevenson’s poem, “Summer Sun”. It portrays the sun as little more
than a harmless prankster, poking its nose into everything, “To
please the child, to paint the rose.”. The underlying message
might be understood more about dominance. The poem describes a sun
that is endlessly successful at ways of defeating the attempts to
escape it.
We know
when the sun is angry, its rage is dispensed indiscriminately,
with no favor given us and there is no way to avoid it. A
catastrophic Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) may be a mere sneeze for
the sun, but if directed our way, it could overwhelm us, altering
the landscape of societies. It is one more example of the many
ways we are tested for our fitness to be inhabitants of this
wonderful place.
Surviving
disaster depends on how prepared we are to adapt to variables
while intuitively clinging to practical skills and a relationship
with nature. The story Gardener of The World, examines the
diverse manners in which individuals might respond to a severe,
widespread CME by following their successes and failures. There
are those who live digitally dependent lives, divorced from nature
and will not understand. There are others who understand, but
lacking any social conscience, see it only as an opportunity to
take advantage of victims. Some who are aware, might very well
accept it as a challenge. We would hope they would be drawn to
cooperate in honorable relationships, with capabilities and
friendship. All of these possible responses and more, are stories
within the Gardener’s tale.
